Tech. Career Connect with Tanay Pratap and Mr. Jiten (Cars24 Global CTO)

On 16th of November, 2021, Tanay Pratap arranged a space with Jiten on twitter and it was a great session loaded with a lot of information. I was fortunate enough to tune in at the perfect time and cover the complete session myself. Here are the key takeaways covering almost everything from that 1 hour session.

  • Curl (an object-oriented language for interactive web applications) is nice and easy to learn so much so that you might learn and work with it on the same day.
  • When you are learning, you are surely sacrificing on something. That may be the time we spend (read waste) on OTT platforms these days or some time that we might have spent chilling out with friends.
  • Take out sometime everyday (at least 30 - 60 mins) and spend it on learning something different from what your current job requires.
  • Jiten is currently learning React Native and next month he will be learning web 3.0. It seems that there is actually a lot to be excited about web 3.0 and we should start investing our time in learning more about it.
  • Before Joining a company make sure you are excited about what they are doing.
  • You shouldn't fear while switching technologies. The trend is always going to be such that the tech. you will be working on after 5 years will be different from what you are working at today. For example you might be working at React today but 5 years down the line it's possible you may switch to Vue or Angular or some other tech. because they are also evolving.
  • 10 years back Java was really important but now the same piece of code written in JS or Golang is considered a better choice.

Then the session moved on to QnA from Audience and the folks asked some really great questions to which Mr. Jiten gave a really satisfying and thought provoking reply. Here goes a summary of the same.

Q. In an environment like today where the software industry is so hot and they are paying such high packages to skilled individuals, how to decide whether one should switch to other organization in case he/she is getting a better offer?

  • Salaries being paid to software engineers in India is changing rapidly in a positive direction since a long time and it gets affected a lot after such inflection points like in 2000, 2008 and now in 2020. From 1:32 to 1:16 to 1:4 at present, we are absolutely ready to go 1:2 in near future and to 1:1 in some years down the line, if we compare it with U.S. employees.

  • Don't switch just for money. You should evaluate whether you will be getting time for yourself. A good work life balance is very important.

  • Work for companies where you have a better clarity of customer experience. Satisfaction motivates you to a great extent and hence matters a lot.

Q. While sharing our learnings, is it ok to go in depth?

  • Yes, it's great to go in-depth while writing or making content on something you have learned because who actually loves an in-depth knowledge will always appreciate it and you need to have a tribe of such learners.

Q. How to get passionate about something?

  • The way to get passionate about something is to start working on it first. You are not passionate about something by birth. You work on it and then you build your passion around it on your own.

This was all from the session. Thankyou for your time and efforts to make it till here.๐Ÿ˜Š
